It happened up in the north in Miyagi and nothing much happened in Kobe.

My friends in Tokyo were all right, too. 
One of them, my former student, had to take refuge at a local gym because his room, being on the 34th floor, shook so harder than the rooms closer to the ground that nearly everything in shelves and closets fell out. I'm glad his crazy ceiling-height bookshelf full of books didn't get him.

But, this is horrible...
They say the energy of the earthquake is 700 times bigger than the one we had in Kobe (the Great Hanshin Earthquake) back in 1995.
1000 people have been found dead so far.

東京の友達は生きてたわぁ。マンションの34階に住んでる元教え子は、震度5で上の階は免震でしなるから実質震度7だって．．．今は体育館非難中。
